Should it have been a red?
And why isn’t there a Tony Gale Icon?

Obviously it shouldn’t have been. The rule requires him to have been denied a clear goal scoring opportunity. He was on the corner of the box going away from goal after a heavy touch. The greatest players in the history of the game would have had to have pulled something spectacular out of the bag to score from there.

On the other hand, a few people on the match thread are being a bit edgy and saying it was a red because Cresswell touched him.

Also, no ref banned for corruption should ever referee again at any level.

Re: Should it have been a red?
Obvious answer, but no.
Ref conned, possibly bought.

All day long

Cresswell had a mare, deserved it

Can't agree with that assesment mate, but funny how we see things diferently. If a slight brush to the arm is now worth a red then the game's finished. IMHO.

Re: Should it have been a red?
The Lyon bloke went over by kicking the ground to make it look like there was substantial contact lower down.

It was a clear dive, which the ref bought hook, line and sinker. Or Lyon bought the hook, ref and sinker.

Can't be sure.

Absolutely fucking not. Going away from goal and barely touched.

Re: Should it have been a red?
He showed naivety at this level

They cheated us all night, we were not street wise enough

He gave the ref an easy decision, end of

We need to wise the fuck up pretty sharpish

It's the lack of big game European experience, we got found out tonight against a sly team

Re: Should it have been a red?
Bad defending by Cresswell should have just kept running inside and forced Dembele even wider, was still only a yellow though, barely touched him, wasn't a clear goalscoring opportunity and Dembele dived.

Re: Should it have been a red?
Firstly, what on earth was a referee previously guilty of match fixing doing officiating an important European game?
Secondly, less than 20 seconds earlier than the incident, there was an absolutely blatant foul on Bowen where he was pushed to the ground from behind
A considerably worse foul than the foul by Cresswell and typical of the fouls he was allowing the Lyon players to get away with unpunished throughout the game and which he was pulling our players up for
Thirdly, there was no way Cresswell was preventing a goal scoring opportunity
The ball was moving away from the goal and Dembele would have to have cut it back to get his shot in, where he'd then be up against Zouma, so Cresswell was not the last man

Re: Should it have been a red?

Nothing in this statement suggests it was a red card according to the laws of the game.

If you need to ask, just watch that prick wink when Cressy gets sent off. Tells you all you need to know. Yes a card and a foul but never a red.

Suggestions from a lot of sources dembele winking at his team mate after cresswell got sent off

I left the ground to 13 messages of fans supporting 10 different teams and every single one of them thought it was bollocks, so enough said.

To not even bother to VAR it?

What is the fucking point, has it just been brought in the ruin the game?

Re: Should it have been a red?
Wasn’t a foul.
Running away from goal
Want near ball
Cresswell was goal side
Zouma on the cover

Ref is a cheat and takes bribes( fact)

Red

Re: Should it have been a red?
At the ground, I was pretty much convinced it was a red. Having seen a replay, I’m now convinced it wasn’t. Dembele felt Cresswell’s fingers brush his arm and diced. Utter disgrace.

Re: Should it have been a red?

The red card was just the icing on the cake. Watching a rerun of the game on TV will make for shocking viewing from a refereeing perspective.

Any wonder the refs integrity is being questioned. Even his assistants didn't look like they particularly wanted to be associated with him on camera at the start and end of the game....

Re: Should it have been a red?
It was never a foul and only a paedophile would think different.
